Reports of domestic abuse against women and children in Cebu City have spiked by 39 percent this year compared to 2024, according to the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).
Police recorded 139 cases of domestic abuse from 1 January to 26 October, up from 100 cases during the same period last year, CCPO Public Information Officer Police Capt. Charisma Gonzales disclosed on Tuesday.
Most of the incidents involved physical and psychological abuse, with the majority of victims aged 30 to 45.
Gonzales cited common causes for the violence as jealousy, financial disputes and long-standing relationship conflicts.
In response to the growing number of reported cases, the CCPO has been directed to strengthen preventive interventions and enhance coordination with local village officials and social welfare units.
Gonzales urged women experiencing any form of abuse — physical, psychological, sexual or financial — to report it immediately to the nearest police station.
“If ever you meet or encounter abuse, not just physical, but also psychological, financial, or even mental abuse, they could go directly to the nearest police station having jurisdiction of their area,” Gonzales said.
“They could lodge a complaint on Violation Against Women and their Children which is RA 9262,” she added.
She cited that while more women are now reporting abuses, many still choose silence due to fear, financial dependence or social stigma.
