After more than a hundred years of being mentioned only in passing, Gregoria de Jesús — the wife of Andrés Bonifacio and custodian of the Katipunan’s secrets — finally becomes the focus of her own story.

The historical film Lakambini Gregoria de Jesús opens in cinemas nationwide on 5 November, coinciding with the 150th birth anniversary of Gregoria “Ka Oriang” de Jesús, commemorated on 9 May 2025. She is among the three heroes honoured this year by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), alongside Emilio Jacinto and Gregorio del Pilar.

Who is Gregoria de Jesús?

Known as the Lakambini ng Katipunan, Gregoria de Jesús was not merely the wife of a revolutionary leader. She served as the keeper of the Katipunan’s documents and weapons and took part in the struggle for independence. Her life was marked by courage, loyalty and endurance in the face of loss and betrayal.

The film seeks to correct the limited way history has remembered her by presenting her not as a supporting figure, but as a central participant in the revolution.

The film

Described as a meta-docu-fiction, Lakambini Gregoria de Jesús combines dramatized sequences, archival interviews, and commentary from descendants and historians. It incorporates material from an unfinished biographical film first shot in 2015.

Produced by Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil under Pelikulove, the film is written by Palanca Hall of Fame awardee Rody Vera and co-directed by Jeffrey Jeturian and Arjanmar H. Rebeta.

Producer Ongkeko-Marfil said the project mirrors the subject’s own perseverance, noting that Gregoria de Jesús’s life reflects endurance, justice, and the strength of women throughout history.

Director Rebeta added that the film aims to restore Oriang’s voice and remind audiences that heroism transcends gender and era.

Cast

The film stars Lovi Poe as Gregoria de Jesús and Rocco Nacino as Andrés Bonifacio. It also features the late Spanky Manikan, Paulo Avelino as Julio Nakpil, and Gina Pareño in a special role.

Why it is screening

Lakambini Gregoria de Jesús highlights the role of women in the Philippine Revolution and revisits the contributions of those whose stories have often been overlooked. Supported by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, the film forms part of ongoing cultural and educational efforts to promote historical awareness and national identity.

The film opens in cinemas nationwide on 5 November and is also included in the QCinema International Film Festival lineup this November.
