Depths of Pandora: Diving into the world of ‘Avatar’

Pauline Songco

Two-part documentary Fire and Water: Making the Avatar Films premieres 7 November exclusively on Disney+.

The sweeping two-part documentary from 20th Century Studios and Lightstorm Entertainment pulls back the curtain on the creative odyssey behind James Cameron’s groundbreaking world.

Featuring never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage, concept art, and candid interviews, Fire and Water captures the dedication and innovation that bring Pandora to life. The filmmakers journeyed from Manhattan Beach and San Pedro to Hawaii, the Bahamas, and New Zealand, chronicling how cast and crew mastered underwater performance capture and free diving inside a staggering 680,000-gallon state-of-the-art water tank.

Executive producers James Cameron and Rae Sanchini lead the project, alongside director/producer Thomas Grane and writer/producer Richard Brehm. The creative team also includes creative director Robert Glowacki, directors of photography John Clisham and Steven Wacks, and creative consultant Geoff Burdick.

The documentary showcases an all-star lineup of interviews, including Cameron himself and key collaborators such as Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Stephen Lang, and Cliff Curtis, as well as the visionary artists, stunt teams, and technical pioneers behind the camera who make the impossible possible.

Produced by Mob Scene, Fire and Water: Making the Avatar Films invites audiences to experience the artistry, ambition and sheer scale behind one of cinema’s most extraordinary universes.
