Viral vitamin-infused water: Here’s the catch, says doctor

From Beyonce to Mark Wahlberg, Hollywood is agog with its latest beauty and wellness obsession: Vitamin water.

From healthy to eco-friendly, vitamin water, according to these celebrities, offer a lot of benefits both for people and the Earth.

Investing in one’s health and planet definitely pays off — literally — as rapper 50 Cent reportedly earned $100 million after investing in vitamin water early this year.

But how effective is vitamin water?

“Vitamin water, I think, is just vitamins and water. So I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, unless if it’s too sugary,” a Philippine Dermatological Society member exclusively told DAILY TRIBUNE in an interview during Watsons Philippines’ recent DermSkin event in SM Mall of Asia.

According to the doctor and dermatologist, who requested anonymity to avoid linking her name to any corporation or brand, “Studies show that food and drinks with a high glycemic index cause more acne,” so drinking plain water for hydration and good skin condition is much preferred.

“Treat it like any food supplement,” the doctor advised for those into vitamin water. “Although, these are not assurance that these can effectively replace the actual eating of fruits and vegetables.”

Vitamin water also could not replace topical treatments for beautiful skin, the doctor cautioned.

For overall health, a good vitamin water, she said, includes vitamin C. Thus, she prescribed making your own homemade vitamin water using real fruits, instead of buying a ready-made or instant one from the grocery or convenience store. She specifically recommended citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, or better yet, the homegrown Filipino calamansi.

According to studies, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that supports healthy immunity and helps in collagen production and tissue repair.

Take note, though, that the “C” in vitamin C does not mean “celebrity” — and so when it comes to your health and beauty, look up to actual science, not influencers!
