The Philippine National Police (PNP), in coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), arrested two individuals in connection with an explosion that killed a worker at the MARBEDCO Rubber Farm in Barangay Mangal, Sumisip, Basilan.
The blast occurred on 23 October 2025 within the farm’s premises, resulting in the death of a male worker who was declared dead on arrival at Basilan Community Hospital.
Following the incident, personnel from the Sumisip Municipal Police Station, local officials, and representatives from MARBEDCO convened to investigate possible motives.
A joint post-blast team composed of the Provincial Explosive and Canine Unit (PECU), Provincial Forensic Unit, and the 32nd Infantry Battalion conducted forensic investigations to determine the type of explosive used.
Information gathered during coordination meetings among the Basilan Police Provincial Office, military personnel, and local leaders suggested the explosion may have been linked to internal disputes within MARBEDCO.
The two individuals, previously involved in related threats and a prior explosion incident, were identified as persons of interest.
Acting on these findings, combined forces from the Basilan Police Provincial Office, 2nd PMFC, and the 32nd Infantry Battalion launched a pursuit operation around 5:30 p.m. on 23 October, resulting in the arrest of the two suspects.
Both were informed of their constitutional rights and are now in police custody as charges are being prepared for filing before the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
Acting PNP Chief P/LtGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. praised the swift coordination among operating units and emphasized the PNP’s commitment to public safety.
“This incident is a clear reminder that the rule of law must prevail at all times. We will not allow lawless elements to sow fear in our communities. Under the guidance of President Marcos Jr., the PNP remains steadfast in its mission to protect lives and uphold peace in every corner of the country,” Nartatez said.
He assured residents that all necessary measures are being implemented to ensure community safety and deliver justice to the victim and his family.
“Justice and peace go hand in hand. The PNP will continue to pursue those who threaten public safety until accountability is served,” he added.
The PNP noted that investigations and documentation of the case are ongoing.
