The Japanese government, through its embassy, has donated more than $55,229 in equipment to a facility in Rizal province to boost livelihood opportunities for hundreds of Filipinos with disabilities.

In a statement, the Japanese Embassy disclosed that the assistance was provided to the Tahanang Walang Hagdanan (House with No Stairs) in Cainta, Rizal, through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Project, known as GGP.

The aid, valued at $55,229, consisted of specialized equipment for the facility’s wood, metal and handicraft workshops, which manufacture wheelchairs, ecobags and other products. The new tools are expected to improve employment for the 290 persons with disabilities (PWDs) employed by the organization.

Yurie Mukaigawa, second secretary at the Embassy of Japan, spoke at the turnover ceremony.

“This initiative is made possible through the GGP, with the ODA (Overseas Development Assistance),” Mukaigawa said. “Through this program, the Embassy of Japan is fully committed to support Filipinos, especially the vulnerable sector.”

Angelita Evangelista, executive vice president and chief operations officer of Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, said the project, which cost an estimated P3.2 million, was conceptualized earlier this year.

Felix “Nonoy” Gonzalez Jr., president and CEO of the facility, expressed gratitude to the embassy for the donation while Virginia Rabino, a planning officer for the National Council on Disability Affairs, cited that employment opportunities for PWDs are consistently lower compared to non-PWDs, citing data from the International Labor Organization.

Meantime, Rizal Governor Nina Ricci Ynares, who attended the ceremony, thanked the Embassy of Japan for the successful turnover.

“It’s a proud moment to show the talent, skills, and willingness of the PWDs,” Ynares said, adding that “morale support is a big help.”

The governor also highlighted that Rizal province is currently procuring chairs from the Tahanang Walang Hagdanan for distribution in Antipolo City. Ynares stressed that the international community has been acknowledging the talents and skills of Filipinos.
