BALER, Aurora — Continuous torrential rains battering this province since Sunday have forced the closure of at least four critical highway sections, paralyzing transport and isolating communities in three towns, authorities confirmed Monday.
Affected areas:
Baler–Casiguran Road (Barangay Dianed, Dipaculao): Floodwaters submerged a 30-meter stretch (KM 0271+700 to 0271+730), while landslides buried another 100-meter segment (KM 0273+600 to 0273+700).
Ditawini Bridge Approach (Dinalungan): A landslide near KM 0293+450 blocked the only access route to Ditumeng and Dikapinisan villages.
Maddela–Dinadiawan Road (Barangay Calaocan, Dipaculao): Multiple landslides dumped over 200 cubic meters of debris, halting cargo trucks bound for Nueva Vizcaya.
The Department of Public Works and Highways–Aurora District Engineering Office mobilized six heavy machines, including backhoes and payloaders, to clear debris.
“We’re working round the clock, but unstable soil and ongoing rains are slowing progress,” said District Engineer Fredelito Mingua.
At least 1,200 residents across 12 barangays in Dipaculao and Dinalungan remain isolated, according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
“We’ve airlifted 500 food packs via helicopter to affected areas, with more en route,” said PDRRMO spokesperson Arnel Tolentino.
The state weather bureau PAGASA attributed the downpour to a shear line affecting eastern Luzon. Moderate to heavy rains are expected until Wednesday, Oct. 23, raising the risk of additional landslides.
The DPWH Region 3 advised motorists to avoid closed routes and use alternate paths:
Baler to Casiguran: Detour via San Ildefonso–Dilasag Road.
Maria Aurora to Nueva Ecija: Take Bongabon–Pantabangan Road.
“Travelers must prioritize safety. Avoid crossing flooded areas,” Tolentino said.
All other national roads in Aurora remain passable as of press time.
