Ford recalls nearly 60,000 vehicles over fire risk

DT

Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 60,000 vehicles across its Ford and Lincoln brands due to a potential fire hazard linked to faulty engine block heaters.

According to Reuters and other sources, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the heaters in some vehicles could crack and leak coolant, which may cause a short circuit when plugged in.

The issue increases the risk of an under-hood fire, though Ford said it has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to the defect.

The recall covers several popular models across different years, including the Lincoln MKC (2016–2019), Ford Explorer (2016–2018 and 2020–2023), Ford Fusion (2019–2020), Ford Ranger (2019–2024), Lincoln Corsair (2020–2022), Ford Escape (2020–2022), as well as newer SUVs such as the Bronco and Bronco Sport (2021–2024) and the Ford Maverick (2022–2024).

Owners were advised not to plug in their engine block heaters until repairs are made. Ford dealers will replace the affected component free of charge, with initial notification letters expected by 24 October and a second notice planned for February 2026, once replacement parts are available, according to the NHTSA recall notice.

As explained by Yahoo Autos, engine block heaters are commonly used in colder regions to help engines start during freezing weather. When the component cracks, coolant may leak onto electrical connections, raising the risk of a short circuit and possible fire.

Owners can check if their vehicle is affected through the NHTSA recall website or Ford’s recall lookup tool, both searchable by VIN.

While recalls are part of normal automotive safety procedures, Reuters notes that Ford has issued several large-scale recalls in recent years, many tied to electrical and engine components.

Analysts warn that frequent safety actions, even when handled proactively, can challenge consumer confidence in a brand’s long-term reliability.

Industry analysts have also observed that Ford’s openness and quick action in addressing safety issues will be crucial in maintaining customer trust, especially as vehicles grow more complex with advanced electronic systems.

Ford owners are encouraged to follow official guidance, avoid using the block heater, and wait for their dealer’s notification once repairs become available.
