Senior Citizens Partylist Representative Rodolfo “Ompong” Ordanes has expressed full support for the Department of Energy’s (DoE) proposal to remove the Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity, saying the measure would significantly ease the financial burden of senior citizens across the country.
“For many of us, electricity is not just a basic need but a lifeline for every home,” Ordanes said. “For senior citizens, access to electricity means comfort and safety — something that’s especially important for one of the most vulnerable sectors of society.”
The lawmaker lauded Energy Secretary Sharon Garin for championing the removal of VAT on power consumption, calling the initiative “a clear act of compassion.”
“Many seniors still shoulder electricity costs in their households,” Ordanes said. “That’s why we are ready to work hand in hand with the DoE to ensure this initiative gets the attention it deserves. It will not only ease their financial struggles but also guarantee a more comfortable life through continued access to electricity.”
Beyond supporting the VAT removal, the Senior Citizens Partylist continues to push for an increase in electricity discounts for indigent and low-consuming seniors. Under current rules, senior citizens who consume up to 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month are entitled to a 5 percent discount.
“To further reduce their expenses, we have filed House Bill No. 434, which seeks to raise the discount to 15 percent for senior citizens under the same consumption category,” Ordanes said.
He also commended enterprises and utilities that consistently implement senior citizen discounts, citing them as proof that both the government and private sector can work together to uplift the lives of the elderly.
Recently, Ordanes attended the Household Electrification Program lighting ceremony of the One Meralco Foundation in Novaliches, Quezon City, where more than 160 households were given direct access to stable and reliable electricity.
“I saw the joy on the faces of the elderly beneficiaries who can now enjoy the benefits of having electricity in their homes,” he shared.
Reaffirming his commitment to the sector, Ordanes vowed to continue pushing for fair and inclusive access to energy for all Filipinos — especially the elderly.
“As your voice in Congress, I will not stop fighting for decent, fair and inclusive access to electricity,” he said.
