President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the Philippines’ strong commitment to regional peace, cooperation, and shared prosperity as he joined fellow leaders in celebrating the 58th Founding Anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Friday.

In his remarks, Marcos extended warm greetings to all ASEAN citizens, highlighting the Philippines’ historic role in the regional organization’s formation.

“On behalf of the Philippines and the Filipino people, I extend warm greetings to all ASEAN citizens on the occasion of the 58th Founding Anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations,” Marcos said.

“We take pride in the Philippines' role more than five decades ago when we laid the foundation for a region anchored on peace, cooperation, shared progress, and prosperity,” he added.

The President emphasized that ASEAN has withstood decades of global and regional challenges through unity, dialogue, and mutual support.

He noted that through solidarity, the bloc has forged productive partnerships and launched initiatives that continue to uplift communities across Southeast Asia.

This year’s ASEAN theme under Malaysia’s Chairship — “inclusivity and sustainability” — was also recognized by Marcos as a reflection of the region’s long-standing aspirations and collective responsibilities in a rapidly changing world.

“This reflects not only the enduring aspirations of our region, but also the shared responsibilities that we must embrace in today's dynamic and complex global environment,” he said.

Looking ahead, Marcos underscored the Philippines’ readiness to lead the regional bloc once again when it assumes the ASEAN Chairship in 2026.

“As the Philippines assumes the ASEAN Chairship in 2026, we will build on ASEAN's achievements in responding to the region's evolving priorities and in facing emerging challenges,” Marcos said.

He concluded by reaffirming the country’s dedication to ASEAN principles and its vision for a peaceful and prosperous future.

“We will uphold ASEAN principles and continue the region's legacy of lasting peace and shared progress as we navigate our future together.”

ASEAN is composed of ten member states, including  Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Founded on 8 August 1967, ASEAN plays a key role in promoting regional stability, economic integration, and diplomatic cooperation across Southeast Asia.
