Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island recorded six volcanic earthquakes over a 24-hour period, according to the latest bulletin from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In the bulletin issued Saturday, Phivolcs reported that the volcano emitted 922 tonnes of sulfur dioxide, with moderate plumes reaching up to 300 meters before drifting northwest.
The number of volcanic earthquakes has declined over the past days — from 11 on 1 August to nine on 2 August, and now six.
Despite the decrease in seismic activity, Phivolcs noted that the volcano’s edifice remains inflated, suggesting ongoing magma or gas buildup beneath the surface.
Kanlaon was recently downgraded to Alert Level 2 (increased unrest) from Alert Level 3 (intensified or magmatic unrest) following signs of reduced emissions and activity.
Phivolcs reiterated that entry into the four-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone remains strictly prohibited, along with flying aircraft near the volcano’s summit.
Residents are still advised to remain vigilant for potential hazards, including steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and possible renewed magmatic activity.
