Despite the cruelty in the world, there is still so much kindness that shows up in different forms. Today, for one woman, it came in the form of a man buying medicine at a pharmacy.
In a personal experience shared by DAILY TRIBUNE contributor Stephanie Mayo, she recounted a touching moment that happened earlier in the day.
In a Facebook post, she shared that while at Mercury Drug’s Santolan Town Plaza branch in San Juan City, she witnessed a heartbreaking scene while waiting in line: an elderly nun hesitating to buy her full prescription due to a lack of money.
“While waiting for a refill of my maintenance meds, I overheard the frail, elderly nun beside me softly tell the pharmacist, ‘Pakibawasan na lang ng dalawa yung (name of med), kasi kulang na pera ko,’” Stephanie recalled.
“Her voice was small, breaking. I glanced at her veined hand, clutching a 1,000-peso bill. My heart sank.”
Stephanie said the pharmacist then offered to use the nun’s points on her Suki Card. But the nun looked confused.
“I was just about to ask how much the two missing tablets would cost when an elderly man on her other side spoke up first,” she said. “‘It’s okay, I’ll cover it.’”
“Maraming salamat po,” the nun replied in a trembling voice, wishing him God’s blessing.
The man also asked if the nun needed anything else, peering at her over his glasses.
Everyone nearby was touched by that simple act of generosity. As the pharmacist “wrapped my medicine, I glanced back at the two of them—now chatting like old friends. This morning, I witnessed kindness,” Stephanie said in her post.
Kindness always has a place—especially when it's needed most.
