GEN Z AT THE HELM: The new era of DAILY TRIBUNE digital

Carl Magadia

The past quarter-century has borne witness to a bold evolution — one that has never backed down from truth-telling and never shied away from uncomfortable conversations. But as DAILY TRIBUNE marks its 25th year in Philippine journalism, it isn’t just about looking back. It’s about recognizing what powers us now — and more importantly, what will carry us forward.

That answer, for the online team, is the youth.

With an average age of 25 to 26, the TRIBUNE’s online arm is not simply adapting to digital demands. It is defining the future of journalism itself. From viral captions to real-time fact-checking, from clever headline spins to nuanced social commentary — the youth of DAILY TRIBUNE are building the stage.

“We’re not trying to say we’re smarter than anyone else,” said one young reporter in the online team. “But we’re more updated. We know what’s happening now because we live it.”

That immediacy is what gives the online desk its edge. The team’s pulse is synced with the beat of the streets, the scroll of social media and the shifting conversations of a restless generation.

“We are opinionated, not conservative,” another online reporter explained, laughing. “Yes, we talk back to the elders — sometimes literally. But it’s to engage. We’re not disrespectful. We’re just not silent.”

For them, being online isn’t a job description — it’s second nature. “The internet is our playground,” said another. “Fake news? Deepfakes? We don’t fall for that. We’ve grown up spotting the difference.”

‘We set the trend because we know the needs’

In a nation where the youth make up the majority, the online team believes they bring a perspective older institutions cannot fake. “We know the needs of the youth — because we are the youth,” said another. “We know what resonates. We understand the memes, the language, the tone.”

The new brand of commentary — witty, provocative, unapologetic — has found a following. What started as a cheeky social media voice quickly became a powerful strategy.

“You don’t just deliver the news anymore,” said one editor. “You invoke. You make them feel — anger, grief, laughter, outrage. That’s what makes people care enough to click, share, or act.”

This new approach, informally known in the team as the “vibes” layer, became the TRIBUNE signature digital voice — spawning viral headlines, emotional reader engagement and plenty of healthy debate.

Not everyone agrees with the new style, but the response has been undeniable.

“One commenter told us, ‘You gave a voice to the silent side.’ Another said, ‘You shine a light on what others ignore.’ And that’s what matters,” said one content strategist.

The technical side

It’s not all content and commentary. The creative team — graphic artists, IT, and night shift designers — bring their own kind of brilliance.

“I entered DAILY TRIBUNE barely knowing InDesign,” admitted one young designer. “But this place became my training ground. That’s the strength of being young — I have all the time in the world to absorb.”

Another chimed in: “We know the tools, the software, the hardware. That’s why the older ones often call us to help,” he joked. “And that’s fine. We’re here for that.”

The collaboration is constant, and the results speak for themselves. Snappy graphics, video explainers, and interactive content now headline DAILY TRIBUNE’s digital platforms.

‘We know the angles, we know the growth’

At the core of it all is vision.

“We know how to interpret trends and metrics,” said one editor. “That’s how we grow.”

And growth is not just the goal — it’s the promise.

“As a younger team, we understand what today’s audience responds to — and what tomorrow’s audience will demand. That’s not a dig at our predecessors. That’s just evolution.

For many in the online team, the DAILY TRIBUNE is more than a newsroom. It’s a launchpad.

“This is where we’ve learned everything. From captions that spark debate to live coverage that makes history — TRIBUNE gave us the tools, the platform the trust,” said one writer.

The recognition has followed. Just this year, DAILY TRIBUNE bagged the 2025 Pro Patria Journalism Award, cementing its place not just in tradition — but in transformation.

The next 25

The TRIBUNE motto — Without Fear, Without Favor — resonates louder than ever in the hands of the young.

They challenge the norms. They question the status quo. They crack jokes, then call out injustice. They spin headlines that make you stop — and sometimes, shake.

“We want to be the first to everything. The frontliners. The industry giant,” said this author. “The unrelenting force of journalism, personified in an organization.”

And as the Tribune moves into its next 25 years, truth is the youth are not just writing the next chapter.

They are rewriting the whole story.
