Luzon agri damage at P1.84B

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Pampanga — Luzon has sustained an estimated P1.84 billion in agricultural damages due to widespread flooding caused by three tropical storms and the southwest monsoon as of 27 July 2025.

According to the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center, the inclement weather has affected 59,749 farmers and fisherfolk, damaged 55,181 hectares of farmland and resulted in 43,689 metric tons of volume loss.

Rice farmlands bore the brunt of the destruction, with 52,210 hectares inundated, leading to a loss of 35,371 metric tons and an estimated P990.34 million in value.

Corn production also suffered, with 1,802 hectares destroyed, 2,488 metric tons lost, and P66.32 million in value. Cassava followed, with 32 hectares damaged, 235 metric tons lost, and P3.49 million in value.

High-value crops, including lowland and upland vegetables, spices, legumes, watermelon, banana, pineapple, papaya and root crops, incurred P224.13 million in losses, with 1,137 hectares destroyed and 5,570 metric tons lost.

The livestock and poultry sector, encompassing chicken, swine, cattle, carabao, goat, sheep, duck, horse, turkey, quail and game fowl, reported P12.66 million in losses from 7,478 heads.

In the fisheries and aquatic resources sector, 2,399 fisherfolk were affected, leading to P516.57 million in losses.

This includes damage to various species such as tilapia, siganid, catfish, malaga, prawn, mudcrab, seaweed and milkfish, as well as fishing equipment like motorized boats, wooden boats, cages, fyke nets, oyster rafts and fishpond dikes.

Infrastructure, machinery, and equipment in Luzon also sustained significant damage, including P21.72 million to irrigation systems, P0.93 million to farm infrastructures, and P98,000 to machinery and equipment.
