Senator Christopher “Bong” Go renewed his call for stronger disaster resilience measures as his Malasakit Team delivered aid to storm-affected families in Muntinlupa City and Cainta, Rizal following the onslaught of Tropical Storm Crising.
In Barangay Alabang, Muntinlupa, Go’s Malasakit Team distributed food packs, fruits, clothing, and other essential items to 150 families affected by the storm on 26 July, in coordination with Barangay Captain Tintin Abas. Go reminded affected residents not to lose hope and assured them of continued support.
“To all my fellow Filipinos affected by the storm, I hope you are in a safe condition. Do not lose hope. Let us help each other,” Go said in Filipino.
Go also emphasized the need to fully implement Republic Act No. 12076 or the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act, which mandates the establishment of clean, safe, and fully equipped evacuation centers nationwide. He noted that using schools and covered courts as temporary shelters often results in unsanitary conditions.
“Our aim in the enactment of the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act is to provide disaster victims a safe environment where they can take refuge and recover before they return to their homes,” Go explained.
In a separate relief operation on 23 July, Go’s Malasakit Team braved chest-deep floodwaters in Barangay Sto. Domingo, Cainta to deliver 250 food packs house-to-house using a rescue boat.
Following the operation, Go reiterated his call for the creation of a Department of Disaster Resilience through Senate Bill No. 173. The bill seeks to unify all disaster-related efforts — from risk reduction to recovery — under one cabinet-level agency.
“Often our country is hit by typhoons, earthquakes, and other calamities. If we have a single department focused on this, the government can respond more efficiently, quickly, and reliably,” he said.
Go also renewed his support for Senate Bill No. 415, which proposes a rental subsidy for displaced families, and Senate Bill No. 669, which aims to provide hazard pay for frontliners involved in disaster response.
A long-time advocate of health and disaster reforms, Go reminded the public of the importance of compassion and service.
“Let us remember, we only pass through this world once. Whatever good or help we can offer to others, let us do it now, because we will not pass this way again,” he said.
There are currently two Malasakit Centers operating in Muntinlupa — at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine and Ospital ng Muntinlupa — serving as one-stop shops for medical assistance.
Go is the principal author of the Malasakit Centers Act and the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act.
