First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos spent a productive and meaningful week in Ilocos Norte, where she visited key Marcos family landmarks such as the memorial room, the ancestral mansion, and photo gallery.
The highlight of her week was the 47th commencement exercises of the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU).
Not only did she serve as the commencement speaker, she was conferred a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Rural Development, honoris causa.
Mrs. Marcos reflected on her college days, noting that she was also part of a graduating class.
“You know, looking at all of you, I remember when I was in your place more than 40 years ago. It’s nice that you made it through the years of hard work, sleepless nights, and countless sacrifices, not just you but also your families and your loved ones who stood by you every step of the way,” she said to the 3,243 graduates.
She also shared a piece of advice to the Class of 2025.
“Don’t be afraid, you know, you already have what it takes to take on the next steps. You already have your education, your values, and your community. If there’s one advice I can give you, it’s to always be open to advice. I always tell my students, there’s no shame in asking advice from the experts,” the First Lady said.
“There’s no shame in asking for help from others. You should listen to your mentors and people you believe in. Ask questions, keep learning because the world will keep on changing,” she added.
For the First Lady, while skills and knowledge are important, it is professionalism, integrity, humility, and dedication that truly set a person apart.
“Use what you’ve learned, be guided by your values, and try to make life better for others. Congratulations once again, Class of 2025. Go forward with courage and kindness in your hearts. Have purpose every step of the way, the world is waiting for you.”
The First Lady previously taught law at the university and served as assistant dean of the College of Law.
