Jannik Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 Sunday to win his first Wimbledon title, avenging his recent loss to Alcaraz in the French Open final.
At 23, the world number one became the first Italian to win at the All England Club and now holds four Grand Slam titles. The victory continues the budding rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz, who together have shared the last seven Grand Slam trophies, with Sinner winning four.
Sinner, who lost five consecutive matches to Alcaraz prior to this final, including the recent Italian Open, showed resilience by turning the match around after dropping the first set.
Both players held serve early, but Sinner earned a crucial break in the fifth game of the second set and maintained momentum throughout. Despite Alcaraz’s efforts to rally, including two break points in the fourth set, Sinner remained composed to close out the match on his second championship point.
The Centre Court crowd, including Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, witnessed Sinner’s triumph. This victory marks a significant milestone in men’s tennis, signaling the rise of new stars beyond the era of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic.
Sinner’s path to the title included a fourth-round win over Grigor Dimitrov, who retired due to injury while leading, a quarterfinal victory against Ben Shelton, and a semifinal upset of seven-time champion Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz was seeking to become the fifth man in the Open era to win three consecutive Wimbledons, joining Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Federer, and Djokovic.
