The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has conferred the Seal of Good Local Governance for Barangay (SGLGB) on 262 barangays during the opening cluster of the Liga ng mga Barangay National Congress held at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

The barangays represent the first batch of national awardees under the 2024 SGLGB assessment cycle. Additional recognition ceremonies are scheduled for 29 July, 19 August, 10 September, and 21 October, during which the remaining qualified barangays will be awarded.

A total of 3,283 barangays nationwide passed the assessment.

The SGLGB recognizes the vital role of barangays in building a Bagong Pilipinas, as envisioned by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. It highlights excellence in local governance, as well as a commitment to accountability, transparency, and responsive public service.

Nearly 8 percent of the country’s 41,610 barangays met the standards for the 2024 award.

Selection was based on the DILG’s “3+1” principle — barangays must demonstrate excellence in all three core governance areas: financial administration and sustainability, disaster preparedness, and peace and order. In addition, they must meet the criteria in at least one essential area: social protection and sensitivity, business-friendliness and competitiveness, or environmental management.

Of the 3,283 awardees, 663 barangays were recognised for two consecutive years, while 2,620 received the distinction for the first time.

DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla has ordered a restructuring of the SGLGB system starting in 2025 to establish a unified, strategic, and outcome-based performance evaluation framework across all levels of local government. The goal is to move beyond mere compliance and foster genuine transformation in local governance.

The SGLGB program is part of the DILG’s push to elevate grassroots public service. By enhancing local governance at the barangay level, the department aims to build resilient, ethical and service-driven communities — from villages to towns and cities.
