The University of the Philippines (UP) has condemned in the strongest terms the killing of UP Diliman student Sophia Coquilla, who was found dead in her home in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, on 9 July 2025.

“The University of the Philippines strongly condemns the senseless killing of UP Diliman student Sophia Coquilla,” the UP administration said in a statement Friday.

“Such a violent act cut short a life full of promise, and robbed the nation of a bright mind and future leader.”

Coquilla, 19, was known for her academic excellence and community involvement. Her brutal death has sparked grief and outrage across the UP community and beyond.

“We grieve over the loss of a daughter, classmate, friend, and Iskolar ng Bayan,” the statement read.

The university said it has extended assistance to Coquilla’s family and is making psychosocial services available to students and staff affected by the tragedy.

“This tragedy is also a stark reminder that we must be vigilant in safeguarding the lives and rights of our fellow citizens, fostering a society where senseless harm is met with unwavering resolve and compassion,” it added.

The state university also called on law enforcement agencies to ensure a swift, transparent and thorough investigation, urging authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable.

“We call on law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into the crime, and to bring the perpetrators to justice,” UP said.

“No family should have to endure the anguish of unanswered questions, and no criminal act should remain unpunished.”

In its closing statement, the university emphasized that it “stands united in pursuing the conviction of those who commit such heinous acts” and reiterated its call for a society that ensures the safety of all, especially within the sanctity of their homes.

“Today, we demand justice for Sophia,” it declared.
