Manila launches weekly cleanup drive

The Manila city government kicked off its citywide cleanup and declogging drive on Saturday, with Mayor Isko Moreno inviting residents to follow the campaign through his official Facebook page.

The movement gained traction on social media with netizens posting updates using hashtags like #LinisKoMaynila and #MakeManilaCleanAgain as hundreds of residents, barangay workers, and city personnel joined the effort.

The campaign is part of Executive Order 3 signed earlier in the week by Mayor Moreno, mandating every Saturday as a regular cleanup and declogging day in all 896 barangays of Manila.

The order responds to public outcry over worsening garbage collection, clogged drains and flooding in recent weeks.

Photos of cleared canals, clean sidewalks, and garbage-free streets flooded social media as residents showed their support for the initiative.

In his State of the City Address on 1 July, Mayor Moreno vowed consistency in implementing the campaign.

“We will consistently implement this policy. And I will provide you with consistent leadership for this policy,” he said.

Manila Barangay Bureau Director Joel Par echoed the mayor’s message during a Saturday radio interview.

“The city government is doing its part by hauling away mountains of garbage. When it rains, trash ends up in the canals and esteros,” Par said. “This will now be done every Saturday, in line with the mayor’s order.”

Par also appealed directly to barangay leaders: “To all 896 barangays of Manila, let us follow the mayor’s directive. Let us work together.”
