Support for Alex Eala overflowed after she made a historic appearance in the women’s singles event of the Wimbledon Championships late Tuesday (Manila time).
No less than his uncle, former Philippine Sports Commission chairman Noli Eala, led the country in cheering for the 20-year-old Filipina, who bowed to reigning champion Barbora Krejcikova of Czech Republic in the first round at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
Eala displayed impressive performance early on but fell prey to the Czech’s deadly serves in the second and third sets to suffer an early exit in her first ever main draw appearance in Wimbledon.
But Eala didn’t feel low, saying that the setback is something she needs to experience as she navigates the tough road of professional tennis.
Noli, who is the first cousin of Eala’s father, lauded the fighting attitude of Eala, who became the first ever Filipina to see action in the main draw of a Grand Slam event.
“Not the result we wanted. Alex came out with so much fight but it’s hard enough to play vs the defending champ,” said Noli, who is also a former Philippine Basketball Association commissioner.
“It’s doubly difficult to debut in a slam at the center court of Wimbledon. Keep moving forward, Alex. There’s much more to come… soon. Mabuhay!”
Even President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos were cheering for Eala, knowing that her performance had a massive impact not just in local tennis, but in Philippine sports in general.
Araneta-Marcos said she believes that Eala’s gallant stand against the taller, and more seasoned European will inspire younger tennis players to follow their dreams.
“Alex Eala has made history as the first Filipina to play in the singles main draw of the Wimbledon Championships. She inspired every young dreamer back home to believe that they, too, can reach the world’s biggest stages,” Marcos said.
“We’re all so proud of you, Alex.”
Prior to stepping on Centre Court, Eala already drew an inspirational message from the Chief Executive, who assured her that the entire country is rallying behind her.
“We’re already so proud, Alex,” he said.
“Just play your game and enjoy every moment. The whole Philippines is behind you.”
