Expelled Negros Oriental congressman Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. was transferred to St. Luke’s Medical Center in Bonifacio Global City on Tuesday following a recommendation for major surgery, his lawyer said.

Atty. Ferdinand Topacio said Teves underwent a medical examination at a government hospital from morning until mid-afternoon, where doctors concluded that his condition required surgical intervention not available at the facility.

“Mr. Teves’ condition requires major surgery in another hospital with additional equipment and facilities,” Topacio said in a statement.

He said the transfer was carried out in line with Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) protocols on emergency medical cases.

“All trial courts where Mr. Teves has pending cases have been informed of the situation through the most expeditious means possible,” he added.

According to Topacio, Teves began experiencing severe abdominal pain at midnight but did not receive immediate medical attention.

“He was practically on his knees requesting to be brought to a hospital, but BJMP personnel could not grant said request due to ‘protocol,’” he said. “It was only when I arrived at around 7 a.m. that he was brought to a hospital. By then, the pain had become aggravated.”

The BJMP confirmed that Teves, currently detained at the high-security Metro Manila District Jail-Annex 2 in Taguig, was brought to a public hospital at 6 AM on 17 June.

“Following standard procedures, PDL [Person Deprived of Liberty] Teves was brought to the nearest public hospital upon the advice of the BJMP roving physician due to severe stomach pain,” the agency said.

The BJMP said Teves began exhibiting symptoms around 7 PM on 16 June, prompting the jail nurse to provide initial treatment. However, his condition worsened overnight, and the jail warden was ordered to seek hospital care.

Teves is facing multiple charges in connection with the March 2023 assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and several others. He has denied involvement and remains in detention as court proceedings continue.
