Independence Day

The fight for independence is not a relic of the past but a present reality. Each generation is tasked with confronting new challenges that demand resilience and courage. Heroes continue to be born in every generation and pass away as an inspiration.

Tomorrow marks Philippine Independence Day, celebrated on 12 June to commemorate the declaration of the country’s independence from Spanish colonial rule in 1898.

Today is a solemn day of reflection, a moment for us to honor the sacrifices made by our heroes who displayed incredible courage and selflessness, often laying down their lives for the greater good.

As we honor their memories, we are reminded of the painful reality that we often waste their legacy through misguided choices, selfish actions, and moral shortcomings. We remember their bravery, but we sometimes fail to uphold the values for which they fought.

I will not talk about politics today. I will not whine about the lack of ethics among major players in the political arena. I want to acknowledge and celebrate the values of those who fought for my freedom to speak openly and not be beholden to anyone.

Independence Day goes far beyond merely commemorating historical events. It is an ongoing journey towards true sovereignty, national identity, and unity among Filipinos.

In modern society, the day symbolizes freedom and self-determination for all, irrespective of ethnic background or socio-economic status. It means that people will not hesitate to unite and fight for their liberty when it is threatened.

In a globalized world characterized by economic and political challenges, the concept of independence extends beyond merely avoiding foreign domination; it encompasses the pursuit of autonomy and self-determination. It also encompasses issues such as economic self-sufficiency, cultural preservation, and social justice.

For many Filipinos, the celebration highlights the importance of national unity, a message often reiterated by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Unfortunately, this message can sometimes go unheard amidst prevalent animosities, as the Philippines is home to a diverse array of cultures, languages, and traditions.

Independence Day should serve as a platform for national unity and shared identity among the people. It should be a celebration of diversity, where unity does not mean uniformity. It should highlight the rich and varied fabric of Filipino identity and promote understanding and respect among various cultural groups.

As the world grapples with issues like poverty, inequality, and climate change, Independence Day encourages individuals to embody the values of patriotism and civic responsibility, that true independence involves actively participating in the progress of society.

The fight for independence is not a relic of the past but a present reality. Each generation is tasked with confronting new challenges that demand resilience and courage. Heroes continue to be born in every generation and pass away as an inspiration.

There is an increasing focus on recognizing marginalized voices in history and promoting human rights. In recent years, many Filipinos have engaged with themes of justice, accountability, and inclusivity, understanding that true freedom includes the protection of every citizen’s rights and dignity.

The cherished liberty is a gift, an extraordinary privilege. As we honor the struggles of those who came before us, we must also recognize our role in shaping the future, one in which the spirit of independence thrives for everyone.

Today, I feel an overwhelming sense of freedom, as light and unfettered as a bird soaring through the vast, open sky.
