Heavy-handed Filipino middleweight Weljon Mindoro needed just 90 seconds to finish off Mexican rival Omar Munguia in their scheduled eight-round middleweight contest Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila) at the Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio, Texas.
Mindoro, who came into fight with a 13-0-1 win-loss-draw record with 13 knockouts, buckled down to work immediately and shots meant to disable and paralyze Munguia, who entered the match with an 8-0-0 slate with six knockouts.
Fighting out of Las Vegas, Mindoro, 25, landed a vicious right uppercut as Munguia was attempting to duck.
Munguia hit the floor immediately and was so dazed that he could not beat the count of the referee as his handlers rushed to attend to him.
Turning pro in 2019, Mindoro hails from Zamboanga del Sur, and his Texas knockout win was his third straight on American soil after appearances in Florida.
Represented by the father-and-son tandem of Sean and Brendan Gibbons, who operates Knucklehead Boxing and Viva Promotions alongside MP Promotions, Mindoro got help in training from fellow Zamboanga puncher Eumir Marcial.
Mindoro and Marcial trained together and exchanged tips while camping out at the Knuckleheads Boxing Fraternity training center in Sin City.
