President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to tear down the so-called “Mt. Kamuning” footbridge in Quezon City and replace it with a safer, more accessible pedestrian crossing.
Dubbed “Mt. Kamuning” due to its steep incline, the footbridge has long been criticized for being inaccessible — especially for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).
“I believe the President’s sentiment is that this is not how we should be treating our citizens, particularly road users and commuters,” said Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.
He added: “The President told me, ‘We have to tear it down and build a better one.’ And I think that really captures the essence of what he wants to do.”
Dizon assured the public that the government will act swiftly to follow through on the President’s directive.
“The President’s order is clear: make our facilities more convenient for pedestrians and commuters. That’s exactly what we’re going to do — we’ll make sure the replacement footbridge is much easier to use for everyone,” he said.
The new footbridge will be built at a lower elevation, feature elevators, and be directly connected to the GMA-Kamuning EDSA Busway station. Construction is expected to begin this year.
