Even as she faces an impeachment trial this month, Vice President Sara Duterte trained her aim Monday not at her political foes, but at mosquitoes.
In a message marking Dengue Awareness Month this June, Duterte urged Filipinos to take proactive steps in curbing the spread of the deadly mosquito-borne illness — one of the few threats she acknowledged publicly amid growing scrutiny over her office’s spending and recent political controversies.
“Let’s unite in the effort to control the increase or spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes,” Duterte said, steering clear of any comment on the impeachment charges gaining traction in Congress.
She emphasized the crucial role of households in fighting dengue, a disease that continues to affect thousands across the country.
“Let’s remember that as citizens, our role is crucial in fighting dengue,” she said, urging the public to support the Department of Health’s anti-dengue campaign.
“This disease, caused by mosquitoes that can breed in our homes and communities, is deadly,” the vice president warned. “We are all at risk of being victims of this disease.”
Duterte encouraged everyone to regularly inspect their surroundings for possible mosquito breeding sites — including water containers, old tires, drums, and other household items.
“Inside the house, check the curtains, drawers, under the sofa, wardrobes, and other places that can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes,” she said. “Window screens, doors, and mosquito nets also provide protection.”
She also advised wearing long sleeves and pants, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. “Using insect repellent also helps,” she added.
The Vice President further encouraged communities to join local cleanup drives.
“Fighting against dengue is the protection of our family,” Duterte said.
