Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) Secretary Jose Ramon P. Aliling welcomed the signing of the National Housing Authority Act as a major step forward for the government’s mass housing initiative.
Aliling thanked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for signing Republic Act 12216 on 29 May, which strengthens and extends the National Housing Authority’s (NHA) mandate by another 25 years.
“We thank the President for signing RA 12216. As a key shelter agency of DHSUD, the NHA will play a crucial role in producing housing units under the recalibrated 4PH program,” Aliling said.
He noted that with the 4PH now expanding to include horizontal housing developments, the NHA’s role in housing production and financing will become even more vital.
Among the key reforms introduced under the new law is the inclusion of two private-sector experts on the NHA Board, bringing in technical insights on housing and urban development.
The reorganization also provides for three assistant general managers—an increase from just one—to help the agency better manage its daily operations.
The NHA is also required to release its updated implementing rules and regulations within 90 days from the law’s enactment.
Aliling said that with a strengthened NHA, more resilient, liveable, and sustainable communities will be built across the country.
