Cainta to file charges against alleged drunk jeepney driver

Neil Alcober

Cainta mayor-elect and municipal administrator Keith Nieto vowed on Thursday to pursue legal action against a jeepney driver who allegedly lost control and rammed into multiple vehicles, injuring five people along Imelda Avenue in Cainta, Rizal.

The incident occurred Wednesday morning and involved a jeepney operating along the Binangonan–Sta. Lucia route. The driver allegedly struck two cars and a motorcycle, causing injuries and property damage.

"I looked into your case yesterday. You're drunk while driving. I just made sure you were charged and imprisoned for the harm you caused to the injured people and damaged vehicles. I just provided them [those who have been injured] free lawyers so that the case may continue," Nieto said.

"And just in case you posted bail, I ordered our lawyers to take a step to suspend your driver's license for quite some time so that this doesn't happen again," the returning mayor added.

Despite the strong legal stance, Nieto said the driver would still be welcome to seek assistance from the LGU in the future, just not behind the wheel.

"Now, when you get out of jail and no one helps you, our door is always open to helping you. Even if you're not from Cainta, we will give you a job, but not as a driver, so that this may not happen again. I'm serious. Not in Cainta. Not here," Nieto said.

"No matter how careful we are, if we meet motorists just like him, we cannot protect ourselves in a road accident. Let's focus on how to reduce them and keep them off the roads," Nieto added.
