The much-awaited romantic film Spring in Prague rolled out its red carpet premiere on 28 May, at Uptown Cinema in Bonifacio Global City. Gracing the celebrity screening were lead actor Paolo Gumabao, producer Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, and director Lester Dimaranan. The film, which carries a PG-13 rating, marks a significant cinematic moment—one that blends international romance with cultural connection.
Produced by Borracho Films and penned by acclaimed screenwriter Eric Ramos, Spring in Prague tells the poignant love story of a Filipino resort owner (played by Gumabao) who falls for a Czech tourist (Sara Sandeva) during her vacation in the Philippines. What begins as a fleeting summer romance turns into a cross-continental pursuit, as he follows her to Prague to discover if their connection was more than just a holiday fling.
But beyond its romantic charm, the film carries diplomatic significance. Shot in both the Philippines and the Czech Republic, Spring in Prague is released during the golden celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The production team even paid a courtesy visit to Ambassador Eduardo Martin R. Meñez at the Philippine Embassy in Prague during their final day of filming in January 2024.
“This is a romantic comedy with depth and historical allusions,” says Topacio, who also serves as executive producer. “It’s a love story, yes, but it’s also a celebration of the enduring friendship between two nations.”
Making her Filipino film debut is Czech actress Sara Sandeva, whose introduction to local media added star power and cross-cultural intrigue. When asked about her experience, Sandeva noted the warmth and friendliness of the Filipino people—a sentiment that echoes the film’s theme of shared human connection despite distance and difference.
Directed by Lester Dimaranan (Nelia, Mamasapano), the film’s creative vision is elevated by the lush visuals of cinematographer Paolo Magsino and a production team led by line producer Juvz Tesalona. The ensemble cast includes Marco Gomez, Elena Koziova, Ynah Zimmerman, Keahnna Reyes, Tori Topacio, and Esel Ponce.
For Paolo Gumabao, the project marks a milestone—his first time in Europe, and his first international lead. “It’s such good fortune to have Prague as my introduction to Europe, and to do it for a film that bridges nations,” he shared during the screening.
Spring in Prague may be a romantic comedy at its core, but its release stands as a symbolic gesture of art and diplomacy—proof that stories of love can go far beyond borders.
