Untold wonders of Bato, Camarines Sur

Jeff Fernando

In the heart of Camarines Sur lies the picturesque town of Bato, a place where tradition, natural wonders and proud heritage come together in harmony. Officially known as the Municipality of Bato (Rinconada Bikol: Banwaan ka Bato), this thriving community of over 52,000 residents offers more than just scenic landscapes — it is a vibrant hub of history, devotion and cultural pride.

Where the water whispers stories

The town’s identity is deeply intertwined with Lake Bato, a rich freshwater resource that sustains the livelihood of many locals. The lake is famously home to the sinarapan (Mistichthys luzonensis), recognized as the world’s smallest commercially harvested fish. It also supports thriving aquaculture with tilapia raised in floating fish cages, a testament to the town’s enduring relationship with nature.

Lake Bato is not just a source of sustenance — it is a destination in itself. Its tranquil waters and surrounding greenery make it a perfect retreat for visitors seeking serenity and a connection to local life.

A town born of faith and history

Long before it became a municipality, Bato was known by early settlers as Kaliligno or Caliligno, a name rooted in the town’s riverside origins. On 15 February 1753, under the Spanish colonial government, this small village was officially recognized as a town.

Even before this date, a parish had already been established, bearing the name of The Most Holy Trinity, which remains the town’s patron. Its feast day is joyfully celebrated every Sunday after Pentecost, marking one of the most significant religious events in the local calendar.

In 2025, the town made history yet again by hosting its first Grand Marian Procession, where 28 sacred images were paraded through its streets — an awe-inspiring display of faith, artistry and community devotion.

Natural escapes and cultural gems

Beyond its lake, Bato boasts a variety of attractions that showcase its raw beauty and laid-back charm:

• Cotmon Falls — A refreshing cascade surrounded by verdant forests, perfect for eco-tourism adventures.

• Arbin Beach Resort and Maruma Beach — Coastal getaways that offer sandy shores and cool breezes for both locals and tourists.

• Most Holy Trinity Parish Church — A landmark of spiritual significance and architectural grace, central to the town’s identity.

Bato is also known for its local delicacy — Pansit Bato — a distinctive noodle variety that has become a culinary symbol not only of the town but also of the Rinconada region.

Wrapped in gabi leaves, filled with grated coconut and shrimp, then simmered in rich coconut milk — Tinuktok is a true Bicolano delicacy that brings comfort in every creamy, spicy bite.

Homegrown talents

Despite its modest size, Bato has produced remarkable individuals who have earned acclaim both nationally and internationally:

• Maria Venus Raj — Crowned Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 2010 and placed 4th Runner-Up in the Miss Universe 2010 pageant, she remains one of the most iconic Filipina beauty queens.

• Julian Alturas — A rising star under ABS-CBN’s Star Magic and Rise Artists Studio, who represents the new generation of Filipino actors with roots in Bato.
