A man posing as an agent of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) was arrested for allegedly extorting thousands of pesos from individuals seeking jobs at the NBI, the police, or wanting to pass the Civil Service Commission (CSC) exam.
The NBI Technical Investigation Division swiftly apprehended the suspect at a shopping mall in Manila.
NBI director Jaime Santiago personally confronted the suspect for using his signature on the counterfeit identification card.
NBI Intelligence Division assistant director Noel Bocaling narrated that the suspect would introduce himself as an NBI agent and promise victims jobs at the NBI and the Civil Service Commission.
Authorities recovered a fake NBI badge and ID, along with fraudulent documents, including purported scholarship grants for aspiring flight attendants.
The NBI reported that the suspect allegedly obtained approximately P200,000 from a couple after promising them they would pass the CSC exam and secure jobs at the NBI with a monthly salary of P35,000.
Investigators also discovered that the suspect had connections to an orphanage in Bulacan that was previously raided for its alleged involvement in illegally facilitating the adoption of children by foreigners.
One complainant, identified only as “Mac,” expressed his concern, stating that his family’s future was jeopardized when the documents processed by the suspect turned out to be fake. He is demanding the return of his savings.
The suspect vehemently denied the allegations, saying, “I’m not doing anything wrong, sir. Just trust.”
Bocaling said the suspect will face charges of estafa (swindling) because the crime was completed when he received the money as he urged anyone who may have been victimized by the suspect in the past to come forward to the NBI office, and their cases will be added to the charges being filed.
