The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will begin accepting applications nationwide for its Government Internship Program (GIP) from Monday through Wednesday.

DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said Friday that the GIP is part of the Kabataan 2000 program, a government initiative aimed at providing young people with hands-on experience in various government agencies.

“This is an opportunity for college students to learn life skills in the workplace and at the same time earn money to defray their school expenses,” Dumlao said.

A total of 75 internship slots will be available for each DSWD Field Office, while 35 slots will be offered at the Central Office in Quezon City.

The GIP application is open to college students aged 18 to 25, with preference given to incoming third and fourth-year students for the upcoming school year.

Applicants’ monthly family income must not exceed the latest regional poverty threshold set by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

Selected interns will receive a stipend equivalent to 75 percent of the November 2022 regional minimum wage for 30 working days of service.

Dumlao said the program will be implemented during the summer school break to allow students to use their free time productively.

Interns assigned to the DSWD Central Office will be involved in tasks such as administrative work, document recording and tracking, liaising with other offices, photocopying, and report encoding. Those stationed at the Field Offices will support regional operations.

From 2017 to 2024, nearly 8,000 college students have benefited from the program, gaining practical experience and a better understanding of public service.
