At least 21 people were killed Wednesday in a multi-vehicle crash involving a bus and a trailer truck in the central Mexican state of Puebla, local authorities said.
Eighteen people died at the scene and three more succumbed to their injuries in hospitals, Samuel Aguilar, a Puebla state government official, told reporters.
An unspecified number of others were injured and are being treated in nearby medical facilities, he said.
Highway accidents in Mexico have become increasingly common in recent years, often attributed to poor vehicle maintenance, reckless driving and driver fatigue.
Wednesday’s crash comes just three months after one of the country’s deadliest collisions in recent memory. On 8 February, 38 people were killed when a truck slammed into a passenger bus in the southeastern state of Campeche.
