‘By restoring their sight, that is kindness, that is compassion, and our doctors and volunteers have the joy in giving without expecting anything in return.’

Ahead of Mother’s Day, the Tzu Chi Eye Center held an event Friday with its doctors and patients, underscoring its ongoing commitment to eye care and protection for the less privileged.

Held at the Tzu Chi Eye Center Building, the foundation’s CEO Alfredo Li stressed the organization’s dedication to serving those in need.

“By restoring their sight, that is kindness, that is compassion, and our doctors and volunteers have the joy in giving without expecting anything in return,” Li said, adding that it embodies the teachings of Buddha.

The celebration also precedes Buddha Day, which will be observed on Monday.

Li explained that the foundation’s name, Tzu Chi, translates to “compassion” and “relief,” and that founder Master Cheng Yen, a Buddhist nun, teaches that genuine help must come from the heart.

Activities during Friday’s event included the washing of feet, a significant gesture in Chinese culture symbolizing deep respect and love for parents, particularly timely with Mother’s Day approaching.

Li highlighted that patients receive comprehensive eye care at the center without any cost, from diagnosis to surgery and take-home medication.

Beyond eye treatments, Li added that the Tzu Chi Foundation actively engages in humanitarian efforts during disasters, sending teams to assess needs and provide assistance. He cited their involvement in the cleanup efforts in Marikina City after typhoon “Ondoy” and in Leyte following super typhoon “Yolanda.”

Located in Sta. Mesa, Manila, the Tzu Chi Eye Center is open to all patients with eye conditions, with a focus on prioritizing the needs of the less fortunate.
