Kieffer Alas has a golden chance to train at the Impact Basketball Academy of Joe Abunassar in Las Vegas when he flies to the United States in July.
His father, veteran coach Louie Alas, told DAILY TRIBUNE that the 17-year-old former De La Salle Santiago Zobel (DLSZ) playmaker was invited by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to meet Abunassar that could lead to a workout at his world-class facility on 20 July.
The Impact Basketball Academy has been a breeding ground of the world’s finest basketball talents, some of them are already playing in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Among its elite roster of clients include Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers, Tyrese Haliburton of the Indiana Pacers and Kristaps Porzingis of the Boston Celtics.
Abunassar also boasts that over 130 players who trained with him were selected in the previous NBA drafts.
“The SBP has an affair in Vegas with Coach Abunassar in July, so they invited Kiefer just in case we’re in Vegas,” the elder Alas said.
“It is an SBP event.”
The younger Alas and his family had a courtesy call with SBP executive director Erika Dy on Thursday, two days before he flies to Perth for competitive training before enrolling at Layton Christian Academy in Utah to play high school ball.
The elder Alas is thankful that everybody is backing his son’s journey as he strives to improve his skill set.
“It’s so amazing to feel that. It’s so good to know that everyone is supporting you,” the elder Alas said.
“With the help he’s got, you don’t have to worry about other things as he will only focus now on studying and training.”
Alas expressed his gratitude to DLSZ for helping him hone his skills despite not making it into the Final Four.
“Words can’t express my gratitude. Thank you for loving me not because of but despite everything that has happened,” Alas said.
