ZAMBOANGA CITY — The military, through the 1102nd Infantry “Ganarul” Brigade, conducted a series of community outreach activities in the island town of Banguingui in Sulu province to strengthen ties with local communities and promote civic responsibility.
1102nd Brigade Commander Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelino delos Santos said yesterday that Task Group “Banguingui,” led by Col. Alex Gagula, conducted a series of community outreach activities in Barangay Dungon, Banguingui, Sulu on Friday.
Delos Santos said, “Our soldiers’ presence in Banguingui town is not just about maintaining order — it’s also about showing that the government cares for the people of Banguingui town in Sulu.”
Delos Santos emphasized the importance of sustained community engagement in achieving long-term peace: “Peace is not achieved by force alone, but by genuine connection with the people.”
“Through activities like this, we build bridges of trust and cooperation that are vital for lasting peace in Banguingui,” he added.
Delos Santos said the activities featured a clean-up drive, fun games, a feeding activity and the distribution of rice to residents.
This included addressing basic needs, creating moments of joy and educating our people about their civic duties, we are laying the groundwork for a safer, more informed and resilient community.
“Activities like this are essential in bridging gaps — whether in basic services, access to information, or trust between communities and institutions. All these help in fostering a sense of unity, belonging, and hope to the local communities,” Delos Santos further explained.
The military also conducted a loudspeaker campaign and distribution of leaflets to raise awareness about the upcoming National and Local Elections on 12 May.
Delos Santos said that “Our responsibility as protectors of the people extends beyond the battlefield. It includes ensuring that every Filipino, especially in areas like Banguingui, feels the presence, care, and commitment of their government.”
He also reaffirmed the brigade’s support to governance and peacebuilding by continuing to work hand in hand with local leaders and stakeholders to uplift the lives of our people.
The 1102nd Brigade Commander also pointed out that “True security is achieved when communities are informed, empowered, and united in their pursuit of peace and development.”
The community engagement of activities was facilitated by Cpt. Xandra Lou Basaen, Commanding Officer of the 2nd Civil-Military Operations (CMO) Company of the 15th CMO Battalion, CMO Regiment, Philippine Army, Delos Santos said.
