First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Philippine embassies in the Vatican and Italy during the recent quick visit of the First Couple to Rome.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the First Lady flew to Rome to attend the funeral of Pope Francis last Saturday.
“Our quick trip to Rome for the funeral of Pope Francis felt a little lighter because of the kindness and support of our Philippine embassies,” Mrs. Marcos said.
“Thank you for taking such good care of us — and for being a steady presence for every Filipino finding their way far from home,” she added.
Her comments conveyed the sense of comfort and support the Marcoses received from the Filipino community in Rome during a difficult time.
While the trip had a solemn purpose, the First Lady and the President found moments to enjoy their time in Rome.
After the Pope’s funeral on Saturday, the couple took a break from official duties to share a final dinner in the city.
“One final meal before heading home – made even sweeter by the staff who surprised us with an anniversary cake,” Mrs. Marcos said. The couple celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary
In Italy where they were wed.
During their short stay, the First Lady also showcased Filipino craftsmanship.
“Roaming Rome with my Marikina bag — a little bit of heart and a whole lot of hustle. Proud carrying the Filipino spirit wherever my feet [and husband] will take me,” she posted, accompanied by a photo of herself in the streets of Rome.
The bag, made in Marikina, symbolized the resilience and artistry of the Filipino people as the couple explored the city.
The visit highlighted both the solemn purpose of attending the Pope’s funeral and the First Lady’s pride in her Filipino heritage, reinforcing the strong presence and contributions of Filipinos globally.
