Carlos Yulo is set to have a two-week training camp in South Korea to prepare for the Senior and Junior Men’s Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships set from 5 to 8 June in Jecheon, South Korea.
Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion told DAILY TRIBUNE that Yulo and his teammates will train in the final two weeks of May as they face powerhouse countries like Japan and China.
The 25-year-old gymnast was at Lucky Chinatown Mall in Binondo last Friday for the unveiling of the new stamps presented by the Philippine Postal Corporation.
“He will be in Korea for the training camp in the last two weeks of May, along with Miguel Besana, Ace de Leon and John Ivan Cruz,” Carrion said in a text message.
Last year’s Asian Championships in Tashkent saw Yulo win not only the men’s floor exercise, parallel bars, and vault but also the elusive individual all-around crown.
From there, Yulo dominated the Summer Games en route to becoming the greatest Filipino Olympian of all time with two gold medals.
Yulo has been training since January and said he is enjoying the process of getting back in shape as he braces for tougher tournaments this year.
Aside from the Asian Championships, Yulo is also gearing up for the 53rd Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta from 19 to 25 October and the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand from 9 to 20 December.
“As usual, it’s really hard to come back when you’re coming from a long break. I’m enjoying the process. I’m very happy with what’s happening for me right now,” Yulo said.
“I’m really hoping to have a safe and successful performance there.”
