Lourdes QC shrine pays tribute to “Lolo Kiko”

Jefferson Fernando

At the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Quezon City, a quiet yet powerful tribute stands at the altar — a special space adorned with a photograph of Pope Francis, lovingly captioned, “Thank You, Lolo Kiko.”

The gesture speaks volumes about the deep gratitude and affection the Filipino faithful hold for the late Holy Father, whose papacy left an indelible mark not only on the global Church but intimately so on the local devotion at Lourdes.

It was Pope Francis, fondly known as “Lolo Kiko” in the Philippines, who, through his apostolic authority, granted the image of Our Lady of Lourdes at the National Shrine the singular honor of a canonical coronation. This sacred recognition forever deepened the devotion of countless pilgrims who seek solace, healing, and hope at the feet of the Mahal na Birhen.

Now, as the world mourns the passing of a pope who championed the poor, embraced the suffering, and called for a Church that walks with the people, the National Shrine offers its own heartfelt thanks.

In a message displayed near the altar, the Shrine community reflects:

“We honor Pope Francis, our beloved Lolo Kiko, whose papal love reached our very shores. It was through his apostolic authority that the image of Our Lady of Lourdes at our National Shrine was granted the honor of a canonical coronation — a gift that forever marked our devotion and deepened our faith.

"As we mourn his passing, we give thanks for a shepherd who uplifted the humble, embraced the suffering, and crowned our Blessed Mother in the hearts of the faithful. Maraming salamat, Lolo Kiko. Our Mahal na Birhen welcomes you home.”
