7 p.m. — Petro Gazz vs BAIC Motor
Petro Gazz faces a daunting challenge with a collision course against Chinese powerhouse BAIC Motor in the 2025 AVC Women’s Volleyball Champions League quarterfinals today at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
Action begins at 7 p.m. following the curtain-raiser clash between Taipower and VTV Binh Dien Long An.
The Chinese Volleyball League silver medalists swept their way through pool play to clinch the top seed in Pool C, led by the explosive Jin Ye, who delivered a dominant 30-point performance to anchor their unbeaten two-game run.
The Angels, on the other hand, will lean on Filipino-American Brooke Van Sickle, who has emerged as Petro Gazz’s key weapon, averaging 11 points in Pool D.
The two-time Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Most Valuable Player relishes her first international tournament representing a Philippine club.
“This is where we want to be,” Van Sickle shared.
“It was awesome that we were able to get into this tournament. It’s an incredible opportunity to see great volleyball — even beyond our pool.”
Van Sickle expresses admiration for the level of competition in the tournament, pitting the best clubs on the continent and considers it a learning experience.
“This is crazy volleyball right now. All the teams are champions from Asia. I’m just trying to soak it all in and learn as much as I can,” she added.
Aside from Van Sickle, Petro Gazz will count on Finals MVP MJ Phillips, American import Gia Day, and locals Myla Pablo, Jonah Sabete, and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas to try and outgun a well-oiled BAIC Motor squad also boasting standouts Lu Yufei, Shan Lanfeng and Shen Hongyi.
A victory for the Angels could set up a rematch with their Pool B tormentor, Kaohsiung Taipower, or a highly anticipated battle against Vietnamese superstar Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and VTV Binh Dien Long An in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, the Taiwanese club Taipower is riding the crest of its dismantling of Petro Gazz in the pool stage in four sets. That win followed a demolition job of Hong Kong’s Hip Hing, 25-10, 25-16, 25-14.
Meanwhile, the Vietnamese side settled for the second seed in Pool C after a heartbreaking five-set loss to BAIC Motor.
