New Jersey is now about 40% contained after scorching approximately 12,500 acres, according to the latest report from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).
Authorities confirmed that 18 structures are still under threat, though evacuation orders have been lifted for around 5,000 residents in Lacey and Ocean Townships, allowing them to safely return to their homes.
While the exact cause remains under investigation, officials believe the wildfire may have been sparked by dry conditions combined with strong winds, which are common contributing factors in springtime forest fires. Preliminary reports suggest that human activity, whether accidental or negligent, may have played a role, as no lightning strikes were reported in the area at the time the fire began.
Fire crews continue their efforts on the ground and from the air to fully contain the blaze, with support from local and state firefighting agencies.
