7 ways SM Supermalls promotes sustainability beyond Earth Day

In celebration of Earth Day 2025, SM Supermalls is reaffirming its commitment to environmental sustainability through a series of year-round programs aimed at promoting eco-conscious habits among the public.

The company said its efforts go beyond single-day observances and are designed to make sustainability a part of daily life for mallgoers, tenants, and communities.

“Our malls are more than shopping destinations—they’re spaces where people and the planet can thrive together,” said Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director of SM Cares for Environment. “Through programs that are easy to join, SM makes it possible for every visitor to take part in a more sustainable future.”

Among the initiatives highlighted by SM are:

  • Electric Vehicle Charging Stations: With 123 charging stations across 69 malls, SM has delivered over 14,500 kWh of clean electricity to EV users. An additional 50 chargers are planned for 2025.

  • Solar-Powered Properties: As of 2024, 47 malls and other properties have solar installations, which generated 27.6 GWh of clean energy last year—equivalent to removing over 4,100 vehicles from the road. SM aims to reach 100 MWp of rooftop solar capacity by 2027.

  • Energy-Efficient Infrastructure: Malls incorporate features like sky gardens, skylights, LED lighting, and motion-sensor escalators to reduce electricity consumption. SM also contributes 110 MW to the Department of Energy’s Interruptible Load Program.

  • #SMWasteFreeFuture Campaign: Launched in 2023, the campaign enforces proper waste segregation practices across tenants using a bin system labeled Recyclable, Disposable, and Compostable. SM also promotes a sustainability-focused culture among employees.

  • Trash-to-Cash Recycling Market: Held on the first Friday and Saturday of every month, the initiative has processed over 1 million kilograms of recyclables annually. Items such as paper, plastic, metals, and old appliances can be exchanged for cash.

  • Plastic and E-Waste Collection: Used plastics can be dropped off at 15 malls, while e-waste bins are available at Cyberzone areas nationwide. The company reports diverting 63,874 kg of plastic and over 11,000 kg of e-waste from landfills in collaboration with partners including Friends of Hope and Smart/PLDT.

  • Coastal Cleanups: In 2024, more than 27,000 volunteers from 15 malls collected over 157,000 kilograms of waste from coastal and waterway areas. SM continues to conduct regular cleanups on a weekly and quarterly basis.

From infrastructure upgrades to community-based activities, SM said it aims to make environmental stewardship accessible and inclusive.

“Every small act adds up,” said Silerio. “And at SM, Earth Day isn’t just April 22—it’s every day.”
