Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island registered one volcanic quake and spewed 3,078 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Friday, 18 April, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
According to Phivolcs’ bulletin issued on Saturday covering a 24-hour period from 12 a.m. on Friday, the volcano had weak plumes which reached 50 meters tall before drifting west. The volcano’s edifice also remains inflated.
To date, Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 3 signifying intensified unrest/magmatic unrest. The six-kilometer radius from the volcano should remain evacuated and flying aircrafts near the the volcano remains prohibited.
Residents are also advised to be cautious of the following hazards: Sudden explosive eruption,lava flow/effusion,pyroclastic density current, rockfall and lahars during heavy rains.
Kanlaon’s last explosive eruption occurred last 8 April at 5:51 in the morning which produced gray voluminous plumes reaching four kilometers high in height.
