Graduation season in Muntinlupa was nothing short of inspiring, but one moment stood out among the many moving-up ceremonies and recognition rites held across the city’s 32 public schools.
Among the thousands of graduates this year, Jacky Medel drew heartfelt applause — not just from her fellow graduates — but also from Mayor Ruffy Biazon, who praised her unwavering determination to finish her studies despite the odds.
“Congratulations, Jacky Medel! More than a job well done — you make us proud!” Biazon wrote in a social media post after the event. “I’m just sad that I wasn’t able to hand your diploma... let’s reenact it instead!”
The mayor, who had to divide attendance duties with other city officials due to the sheer number of ceremonies compressed into just two days, said the moment underscored what graduation is truly about: perseverance, regardless of age.
“You’ve succeeded! Senior Sigma!” he added, using a play on words to celebrate Medel’s late but triumphant academic success.
Biazon, a reelectionist aiming for another term as Muntinlupa’s local chief executive, used the opportunity to emphasize the importance of critical thinking — especially for the city’s youth.
In his speeches across different schools, he highlighted five pillars: observation, analysis, inference, communication, and problem-solving.
“In an age of fast-paced information and overwhelming influence from social media, critical thinking is more important than ever,” Biazon said on Facebook. “It’s not something we’re born with — it’s a skill we learn, and school is where it begins.”
He encouraged students to use what they’ve learned not just as tools for employment, but as guiding principles for everyday life and decision-making.
“It’s not easy, but it’s definitely achievable — especially for the young people of Muntinlupa who have discipline, talent, and compassion,” he added, echoing his administration’s long-standing values of excellence, empathy, and accountability.
Throughout the busy graduation week, Biazon maintained his signature hands-on style of leadership, personally engaging with students, parents, and school administrators despite his demanding schedule.
City officials say that this graduation season was one of the busiest in recent memory — but also among the most meaningful, particularly with the inspiring presence of adult learners like Jacky Medel.
