Hospitals on high alert

‘While many people are resting or traveling, our health workers remain on duty for the sake of their fellow Filipinos.’

Hospitals across the country have increased emergency preparedness as the Department of Health (DoH) raised a Code White Alert from 13 (Palm Sunday) to 20 April (Easter Sunday). The alert is a routine protocol during major holidays to ensure a swift medical response during periods of heightened public activity.

All medical personnel, particularly those in emergency rooms and intensive care units, have been instructed to remain on standby in anticipation of cases related to road accidents, heatstroke, and other health incidents.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, chair of the Senate Committee on Health, emphasized the important role of healthcare workers during Holy Week and praised their commitment despite the holiday break.

“While many people are resting or traveling, our health workers remain on duty for the sake of their fellow Filipinos,” Go said. “We salute them — they are our true modern-day heroes, not just during Holy Week, but every day.”

Go also reminded pilgrims and travelers to stay cautious, especially under the intense summer heat and prioritize their well-being.

“Faith is important to many Filipinos during Holy Week,” he said. “But let’s not forget about safety. Bring water, rest in shaded areas when the sun is too intense, and avoid overexertion.”

He advised the public to immediately go to the nearest government hospital or rural health unit if medical attention is needed.

“DoH-run hospitals are on standby for anyone needing urgent medical attention. If you’re feeling something unusual, don’t ignore it,” Go added.

As the principal author and sponsor of Republic Act 11463 or the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, Go highlighted his efforts to make healthcare more accessible. Malasakit Centers are one-stop shops designed to help poor patients reduce their hospital expenses. There are now 167 Malasakit Centers nationwide, which have assisted more than 17 million Filipinos, according to DoH data.

In addition, Go has advocated for the creation of Super Health Centers across the country. These mid-level facilities aim to improve access to primary care, consultations, and early disease detection. Free consultations are facilitated by municipal health offices, local government units, and PhilHealth through its Konsulta program. With support from fellow lawmakers, DoH Secretary Teodoro Herbosa, and local leaders, funding has been secured for over 700 Super Health Centers nationwide.

DoH also reminded the public to remain alert during Holy Week. Health Secretary Herbosa warned against prolonged sun exposure and encouraged people to stay hydrated to prevent heat stroke as temperatures continue to rise.
