Malacañang on Monday commended the Philippine Inter-Agency Humanitarian Contingent that went to Myanmar where they helped in search and rescue operations following the devastating magnitude-7.7 earthquake that hit the country, claiming over 3,600 lives.

The 89-member Philippine team returned on Monday after a two-week mission. They were welcomed in a ceremony at Malacañang attended by top government officials.

Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro said the contingent was formally commended and recognized for their heroism in the face of the immense destruction.

“They were honored for their bravery and commitment to their duty under such difficult circumstances,” said Castro in a press briefing. “To everyone who went to Myanmar to help, we thank you. Your actions were truly commendable.”

Showed Filipino spirit

Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro also conveyed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s gratitude to the returning team.

“You have shown the Filipino spirit to help others, especially in times of great need,” he said. “The selflessness and professionalism you demonstrated are something the Filipino people are proud of and deeply grateful for.”

“On behalf of the President and the Filipino nation, thank you all very much,” Teodoro added.

Health Secretary Ted Herbosa echoed the praise, describing the team as “ambassadors of hope and humanity.”

“Today, we not only welcome back brave men and women — we honor the selflessness, compassion, and unwavering spirit you demonstrated in the face of tragedy beyond our shores,” Herbosa said.

He said the team embodied the ASEAN principle of “One ASEAN, One Response,” underscoring the Philippines’ role as a dependable and compassionate member of the regional community.

“With your help, the Philippines has proven itself reliable, caring, and capable of responding wherever needed,” Herbosa said. “As you return home, you bring with you the respect and admiration of an entire nation. Your courage and dedication will not be forgotten.”

The team included personnel from the Office of Civil Defense, Philippine Air Force, Philippine Army, Department of Health, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Bureau of Fire Protection, DENR Emergency Response Team, Energy Development Corporation and Apex Mining Co. Inc.

They were also welcomed by OCD Administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno, AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr., Philippine Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Arthur M. Cordura and representatives from the partner agencies.
