David Sassoon, known for designing couture dresses for Princess Diana and other members of the British royal family alongside his creative partner Belinda Bellville, has passed away at the age of 92.

The news of his passing was confirmed by his longtime friend and fellow designer, Zandra Rhodes.

Remembered as a warm and charming figure with a wry sense of humor, Sassoon was widely respected in the fashion world. Throughout his career, fame was never allowed to overshadow his humility. The traditions of fashion as a craft were upheld by him — a time when the spotlight remained on the client, and designers, like other tradespeople, entered royal residences through the side door.

Over the decades, countless elegant, embellished cocktail dresses and evening gowns were created by Sassoon for royals and aristocrats alike. His first royal commission was received in 1960, when he and Bellville were asked to design a long dress for then 10-year-old Princess Anne, who was to serve as a bridesmaid at Lady Pamela Mountbatten’s wedding.

More than 70 outfits were created by Sassoon for Princess Diana, including her iconic cantaloupe-colored going-away ensemble on her wedding day, as well as key pieces from her maternity wardrobe. His work helped define the sartorial legacy of one of the world’s most-watched women.

Sassoon's contributions to royal fashion have left an enduring mark, shaped by elegance, discretion, and timeless craftsmanship.
