Mercury Drug president Vivian Que dies at 69

Vivian Que, 69, longtime president of Mercury Drug — the country’s leading drugstore chain — passed away on 5 April.

She is the daughter of Mercury Drug founder Mariano Que. She assumed leadership of the company in 1998 and oversaw its expansion to more than 1,200 branches nationwide.

A graduate of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Faculty of Pharmacy, Que was one of three alumnae honored during UST’s 400th anniversary in 2011 with the Quadricentennial Award for Exemplary Service to the University.

Over the years, she received numerous accolades from her alma mater, including the 1996 Outstanding Thomasian Alumni Award for Business and Management and the 2010 Outstanding Thomasian Alumni Business Leader Award.

Her contributions to the pharmacy profession also earned her widespread recognition.

Among her honors were the Philippine Pharmacists Association’s Bowl of Hygeia Award (2013), the Outstanding Contribution in the Field of Pharmacy Award from The Colegio Medico Farmaceutico de Filipinas, Incorporada (2019), and the Most Outstanding Health Professional in Pharmacy Award from the Philippine Federation of Professional Associations (1989).

In 2021, Que was named among Tatler’s Asia’s Most Influential. Most recently, she and her siblings ranked 14th on the 2024 list of the Philippines’ 50 richest, with a net worth of $1.7 billion.
