In a strong display of support for the transport sector, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the rights, welfare and health security of public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers during the National Transport Group Gathering held at the Corinthian Gardens Clubhouse in Quezon City on Thursday.
The event, which also highlighted the Public Transport Modernization Program, Go’s backing of transport sector initiatives, and the Ilocano Ako Movement, was attended by transport group leaders from across the country.
Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson, a long-time advocate of transport modernization and regional development, was also present.
In his speech, Senator Go, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health, underscored the vital contributions of PUV drivers and operators to the country’s economy and daily life. He emphasized that their welfare, particularly regarding health access and financial protection, must remain a priority.
“Drivers and operators are the pillars of our society. It is only right that their welfare is championed and protected,” Go said, adding that every Filipino driver should be registered with PhilHealth to ensure access to adequate health services.
He also called for the proper implementation of health benefits under PhilHealth for transport workers, noting that they are among the most vulnerable yet most essential sectors.
Go reiterated that the Public Transport Modernization Program must be fair and inclusive.
“Modernization should not mean the loss of livelihoods, but rather progress and development for everyone. I want to assure you that in the Senate, you have an ally. I will never abandon you,” he assured the attendees.

As Vice Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, Go pointed to the 2025 budget of the Department of Transportation (DoTr), which includes P2.5 billion in fuel subsidies for the transport sector affected by rising fuel prices, and P1.6 billion allocated for the Public Transport Modernization Program.
“In 2021, I also supported fuel discounts and subsidies for those in the transport industry to ease the impact of rising oil prices in the global market, especially during the pandemic,” Go recalled, emphasizing the need for consistent government support to protect vulnerable sectors.
Go also expressed support for other related sectors of the transport industry, such as delivery riders, recognizing their role in the new economy.
“I filed Senate Bill No. 1184 or the Food, Grocery, and Pharmacy Delivery Services Protection Act, which promotes the welfare of delivery riders. Their role in our economy is crucial, especially during the pandemic and the continued growth of digital services,” he added.
Finally, Senator Go expressed his solidarity with the Ilocano Ako Movement, praising the strength and resilience of Ilocanos in uplifting their communities and contributing to national development.
“I stand with the movement that amplifies the voice of every Ilocano. I feel their hard work, resilience, and love for the country,” Go shared.
In 2018, Go had a chance encounter with NCR TODA President Ismael Sevilla, which led to the organizing of a TODA Summit in January 2019 in Pasay City. Go initiated the summit to provide a platform for hearing the concerns of the country’s tricycle sector, particularly regarding uniform regulations and other issues.
With resounding applause and warm support from various transport groups, Go’s message served as a reaffirmation that the transport sector has an ally in the Senate working for their welfare, rights and future.
