As global economic challenges like rising tariffs, protectionist policies, and geopolitical tensions test nations worldwide, the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) has doubled down on its mission in its seven decades of existence to drive resilient, inclusive, and sustainable growth.

FFCCCII hosted its 34th Biennial National Convention at the SMX Convention Center until today, uniting over 170 local Filipino-Chinese business chambers and associations.

Under the theme “Technology, Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Keys to Prosperity,” the convention aims to chart a path amid uncertainty, embracing the Chinese concept of “crisis” as both “danger” (wei) and “opportunity” (ji).

FFCCCII president Cecilio K. Pedro, a prominent industrialist and philanthropist, sees this as a moment for meaningful reforms and unimpeded progress.

“While global conditions are unpredictable, our commitment to nation-building remains unshaken,” he said.

“Through collaboration, technological advancement, and a shared vision, we can build an economy that benefits all Filipinos.”

Long before the Europeans colonized the country, the Filipino Chinese community had been a cornerstone of Philippine development, fostering trade, cultural harmony, and social impact for over a millennium.

The FFCCCII continues this legacy with transformative initiatives rooted in Confucian values of benevolence (ren) and righteousness (yi).

Its Operation Barrio Schools program has donated over 6,500 public school buildings nationwide, making it the most extensive effort in the country and democratizing education in underserved areas.

The Filipino-Chinese Volunteer Fire Brigades provide free emergency services to all, regardless of background, while rapid disaster relief efforts deliver aid during typhoons, floods and earthquakes.

Long tradition

FFCCCII’s 2024 motto, “Dugong Tsino, Pusong Pinoy” (Chinese Blood, Filipino Heart), encapsulates this dual mission of commerce and compassion, a tradition the federation has upheld for over seven decades. At the 2024 FOCAP Prospects Forum, he outlined 12 socio-economic reforms — focusing on job creation, agricultural modernization and infrastructure — as pillars for long-term stability.

Facing global headwinds like trade barriers and supply chain disruptions, the FFCCCII advocates for bold strategies to strengthen the Philippine economy.

To counter external economic pressures, the FFCCCII advocates for:

• Boosting local industries through the “Buy Pinoy” movement, reducing reliance on imports;

• Enhancing trade partnerships with ASEAN, China, Japan, South Korea, the US and the EU while diversifying markets;

• Digital transformation and innovation to improve efficiency and global competitiveness; and

• Policy reforms to streamline business processes, attract investments, and support micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The “Buy Pinoy” movement aims to boost local industries, reduce import reliance and diversify markets.

Digital transformation and innovation are prioritized to elevate efficiency and competitiveness alongside policy reforms to streamline business processes, attract investments, and support micro, small and medium enterprises.

The convention is more than a gathering — it’s a call to action for business leaders, entrepreneurs, and policy advocates to adapt and innovate. “Our strength lies in unity,” Dr. Pedro emphasized.

“By working together — Filipinos and Filipino Chinese alike — we can build an economy that withstands global risks and creates opportunities for generations.”
